Whiff Rate (Whiff%)
Percentage of swings that result in misses. Measures a pitcher's ability to generate swings and misses.
Full Definition
Whiff Rate measures the percentage of total swings that result in a miss (swing-and-miss). For pitchers, a high Whiff% indicates elite stuff that misses bats, which directly translates to strikeouts. For batters, a high Whiff% means they swing and miss frequently, making them strikeout-prone. This metric is crucial for strikeout props — pitchers with high Whiff% facing batters with high Whiff% create ideal strikeout prop scenarios.
What's a good Whiff Rate?
Above 30% is elite for pitchers, 25-30% is above average, 20-25% is average, below 20% is below average.
