On-Base Percentage (OBP)
How often a batter reaches base via hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch.
Full Definition
On-Base Percentage (OBP) measures how frequently a batter reaches base, including hits, walks (BB), and hit-by-pitches (HBP). The formula is (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF). OBP is considered more valuable than batting average because it accounts for walks, which are just as valuable as singles for getting on base. High-OBP hitters at the top of the lineup create more run-scoring opportunities.
What's a good On-Base Percentage?
Above .370 is elite, .340-.370 is great, .310-.340 is average, below .300 is poor.
