CSW% (Called Strikes + Whiffs)
Percentage of pitches that are either called strikes or swinging strikes.
Full Definition
CSW% combines called strikes and whiffs (swinging strikes) into one metric measuring how often a pitcher's stuff generates strikes of any kind. It captures both deceptive pitches that freeze batters (called strikes) and overpowering stuff that misses bats (whiffs). CSW% is one of the best predictors of strikeout ability and future performance because it measures the underlying quality of a pitcher's arsenal on every single pitch, not just the outcomes of at-bats.
What's a good CSW%?
Above 32% is elite, 29-32% is above average, 26-29% is average, below 25% is below average.
