Batting Average (AVG)

Hits divided by at-bats. Measures how often a batter gets a hit.

Full Definition

Batting Average (AVG) is the most traditional measure of hitting ability, calculated by dividing a player's total hits by their total at-bats. A hit includes singles, doubles, triples, and home runs. Walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifices are not counted as at-bats. While AVG is widely used, modern analytics often prefer OBP and OPS as more comprehensive measures of offensive production because AVG ignores walks and extra-base hit power.

What's a good Batting Average?

Above .300 is excellent, .270-.300 is good, .250-.270 is average, below .230 is poor.
