BABIP (Batting Average on Balls in Play)

Batting average on balls put in play, excluding home runs and strikeouts.

Full Definition

BABIP measures how often balls hit into the field of play (not homers or strikeouts) fall for hits. The league average BABIP is around .300 and individual players tend to regress toward that over time. A hitter with a .380 BABIP is likely getting lucky on batted balls and will see their average drop, while a .230 BABIP hitter is due for positive regression. BABIP is one of the best regression indicators for prop bettors — it reveals who is over- or under-performing their underlying contact quality.

What's a good BABIP?

League average is ~.300. Above .340 may be luck-inflated. Below .260 suggests bad luck due for correction.
