## Tonight's Slate

- SD at NYM (Walker Buehler vs Nolan McLean), 7:10 PM
- MIA at PHI (Janson Junk vs Cristopher Sánchez), 6:40 PM
- BAL at TB (Brandon Young vs Shane McClanahan), 6:05 PM
- AZ at BOS (Mitch Bratt vs Alec Gamboa), 7:10 PM
- DET at PIT (Framber Valdez vs Carmen Mlodzinski), 7:05 PM
- STL at CIN (Quinn Mathews vs Rhett Lowder), 1:40 PM
- LAD at COL (Blake Snell vs Tomoyuki Sugano), 8:40 PM
- STL at CIN (Andre Pallante vs Rhett Lowder), 6:40 PM
- ATH at KC (Mason Barnett vs Michael Wacha), 7:40 PM

## San Diego Padres at New York Mets

*Walker Buehler (RHP): 83% NRFI, 4.88 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 7.9 K/9, 3.7 BB/9, NRFI streak of 6. Nolan McLean (RHP): 71% NRFI, 3.42 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 10.5 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, NRFI streak of 1. First pitch 7:10 PM ET at Citi Field (20 ft).*

Walker Buehler anchors this one at 83% NRFI, and the combined 64% rate keeps the game in play as a lean. Nolan McLean is the softer side at 71% NRFI, but he only has to be ordinary in the first for this to cash. Walker Buehler is trending up as well, a 3.32 ERA across his last five starts against a 4.88 season mark. We will take NRFI here, a lean rather than a lock.

## Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

*Janson Junk (RHP): 82% NRFI, 4.41 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 6.6 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, NRFI streak of 8. Cristopher Sánchez (LHP): 80% NRFI, 2.54 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 10.5 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, NRFI streak of 6. First pitch 6:40 PM ET at Citizens Bank Park (20 ft).*

Neither starter hands out early traffic, and in the first inning that is most of the battle. Janson Junk runs a 2.5 BB/9 and Cristopher Sánchez a 2.0 BB/9, so a walk is unlikely to spark the run this bet is fading. On the other side, Cristopher Sánchez is no pushover either at 80% NRFI, so this does not lean on one arm alone. Janson Junk arrives on a run of 8 straight scoreless first innings. The pressure point is the Miami Marlins lineup, which has handled LHP well this year at a .775 OPS in that split, so Cristopher Sánchez cannot afford a sloppy first. The lean is NRFI, carried by the stronger arm.

## Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays

*Brandon Young (RHP): 70% NRFI, 3.33 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, NRFI streak of 2. Shane McClanahan (LHP): 85% NRFI, 3.09 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 8.3 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, NRFI streak of 5. First pitch 6:05 PM ET at Tropicana Field, indoor.*

Shane McClanahan is the reason to look here, a 85% scoreless rate in the first that carries most of the weight for this lean. Brandon Young is the softer side at 70% NRFI, but he only has to be ordinary in the first for this to cash. Shane McClanahan is trending up as well, a 2.51 ERA across his last five starts against a 3.09 season mark. The pressure point is the Tampa Bay Rays lineup, which has handled RHP well this year at a .780 OPS in that split, so Brandon Young cannot afford a sloppy first. NRFI is the side, with a touch of caution.

## Honorable Mentions

- **Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox:** a combined 53% NRFI rate.
- **Detroit Tigers at Pittsburgh Pirates:** Carmen Mlodzinski sitting at 82% NRFI.
- **St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds:** Quinn Mathews sitting at 100% NRFI.

## Games to Avoid

These matchups carry the highest first inning scoring risk on tonight's slate.

**Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies.** Coors does what Coors does. At 5,200 feet the ball carries, and even the better arm here gives back margin in the first. Leave this one alone.

**St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds.** Rhett Lowder's 5.15 ERA tells the story, vulnerable early and often. Leave this one alone.

**Athletics at Kansas City Royals.** Mason Barnett has not shown the early command to trust, a 4.7 BB/9 that invites first inning traffic. This is a spot to skip.

## Before You Lock

Confirm the starting pitchers on the [NRFI dashboard](/mlb/nrfi). A bullpen game kills NRFI value immediately. Check the weather at first pitch and be careful at altitude, Coors in particular. NRFI bets land 55% to 65% of the time historically, and you need roughly 52.4% to break even at minus 110 odds.
